A spokesman for the Israeli delegation confirmed today a report that the International Red Cross had sent a reply to Israel’s request for an objective investigation of the physical and mental state of the II Israeli prisoners who were returned to Israel last Saturday from Syrian prisons, in exchange for 18 Syrian prisoners, previously held by Israel.
Moshe Bartur, Israel’s permanent representative at the European office of the United Nations, in making the request, said such examinations were needed immediately because the Israelis had been subjected to inhuman treatment by the Syrians. The Israeli delegation spokesman declined to divulge the contents of the Red Cross reply, which has been transmitted to the Israel Government.
