Iran began the process Tuesday of feeding uranium hexafluoride gas into centrifuges at Natanz, its main nuclear facility, on a small scale, according to Iranian news agencies and Western reports. Enrichment is a necessary step in making weapon-grade uranium. The reports said Tuesday’s enrichment was not close to that level. Iran suspended its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency earlier this month after the U.N. nuclear watchdog referred the Islamic Republic to the U.N Security Council for sanctions. The IAEA has charged that Iran is concealing a nuclear-weapons program. Iran insists its nuclear activity is peaceful.
