The Iraq government has granted about $80,000 to Jewish victims of the pogroms which took place in Baghdad during the short-lived premiership of pro-Nazi Rashid Ali Gailani last year, according to reports reaching here from Baghdad today.
A special committee consisting of representatives of the Baghdad Jewish community and of the government will distribute the funds. The Jewish community has already spent approximately $100,000 in aiding the pogrom victims, besides allotting about $25,000 to purchase clothing for children of murdered and injured Jews.
Several hundred Jewish refugees from Bulgaria and Rumania who arrived in Baghdad towards the end of last year and early this year are awaiting Palestine immigration certificates, the reports from the Iraquian capital state. Meanwhile, the Palestine government today ordered the release of children between the ages of eleven and fifteen, who have been confined in the internment camp at Athlit for more than a year.
