THE GOVERNMENTS OF TRANSJORDAN AND IRAQ ARE BACKING GREAT BRITAIN IN ITS DECISION TO TRIPARTITION PALESTINE, THE HOUSE OF COMMONS WAS INFORMED TODAY BY COLONIAL SECRETARY WILLIAM ORMSBY-GORE.
THE STATEMENT WAS MADE IN THE COURSE OF MR. ORMSBY-GORE’S SPEECH OPENING THE FORMAL DEBATE ON THE ROYAL COMMISSION’S REPORT RECOMMENDING DIVISION AS THE ONLY SOLUTION TO ARAB-JEWISH DIFFICULTIES.
THE COLONIAL SECRETARY SAID THE TRANSJORDAN GOVERNMENT HAD “EXPRESSED ITSELF STRONGLY IN FAVOR OF THE REPORT” AND ADDED THAT OTHER PARTS OF THE ARAB WORLD WERE “BY NO MEANS UNFAVORABLE.”
REGARDING OPPOSITION TO THE SCHEME VOICED IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT HAD BEEN MADE PUBLIC TWO WEEKS AGO, BY IRAQI PREMIER HIKMET SULEIMAN, MR. ORMSBY-GORE DISCLOSED THAT FOREIGN SECRETARY ANTHONY EDEN HAD MADE STRONG REPRESENTATIONS ON THE BASIS OF THE IRAQ-GREAT BRITAIN ALLIANCE.
“I AM GLAD TO INFORM THE HOUSE,” HE SAID, ‘THAT THE OUTCOME OF THOSE REPRESENTATIONS IS NOW SATISFACTORY. THE IRAQI PREMIER STATED HE RECOGNIZED THE ALLIANCE BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND IRAQ REQUIRED THAT HE DOES NOT PURSUE THE LINE OF POLICY PURSUED IN THE PAST.”
