Iraq seems to be the only one of the five Bagdad Pact members pressing for a discussion of the Arab-Israel conflict at the meeting of the pact nations which opened here today with Secretary of State Dulles and Foreign Secretary Lloyd of Britain present.
Information reaching here says that Iraq insists that the final communique issued at the pact meeting should include a demand for Israel’s return to the borders visualized in the 1947 United Nations partition decision.
Neither the United States, which has only observer status at the parley, and Britain, a full member of the pact, are interested in a discussion of the Palestine issue, feeling that such a move could only serve to sidetrack the deliberations from the main issue–prevention of Soviet penetration of the region. Even Turkey is reported to believe that a Palestine discussion could only serve Moscow’s interests.
