An Iraqi military delegation has been invited to the United States for a three-week visit to tour military installations and possibly discuss acquisition of U.S. arms. The Iraqi delegation will be headed by Maj. Gen. Hassan Sabri Mohammed Ali, assistant army chief-of-staff, who left Baghdad for Washington Monday accompanied by a delegation of high-ranking Iraqi officers.
The visit will be “official.” The group includes the commanding officers of the Iraqi military academy, the presidential group and two field divisions. U.S. sources said it was hoped that Iraq might develop a closer relationship with the United States in the military area to balance its present almost total dependence on the Soviet Union.
