A call to overthrow the Israeli Government was issued here today by leaders of the Irgun in Jerusalem following battle which took place yesterday between Irgun and Israeli military Units on the Tel .Aviv water-front when Israeli mortar fire blew up the Irgun ship, “Vladimir Jabotinsky,” to prevent the attempted landing of munitions in defiance of the U.N. truce.
One of the Irgun leaders addressed a relatively small crowed from an armored car driven to Zion Square in the center of the city, while others distributed Irgun pamphlets in other areas. The vehicle was surrounded by Irgun guards. No incidents were reported. It is believed that no tension will develop in Jerusalem.
The English-language daily, Palestine Post, referring editorially to the Irgun-Haganah clash on the shores of Tel Aviv, said: “No word can be too strong in condemnation of the dangerously foolish attempt of the Irgun Zvai Level to bring in a shipload of arms during the truce period accepted by the Government of Israeli no action by the government can be too drastic in dealing with those who are engaged in a deliberate act of provocation and rebellion. Whatever justification there night have been for the existence of dissident military formations in the struggle against the Mandatory Power, there is none for its continuation in the state of Israel.” Aside from these developments, the city was completely quiet today with more U.N. food supplies coming in, gradually stocking up the previously bars shops and pantries.
