Hafez Ismail, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s special envoy, completed talks today in Bonn with West German government officials. He outlined Cairo’s views on the Middle East situation. Government sources said Ismail had been “encouraged” by his consultations in London, Moscow and Washington and that Egypt appeared to want an early settlement to the Middle East conflict.
Chancellor Willy Brandt told Ismail that Bonn considered the present phase favorable for a settlement. As a European nation, West Germany is interested in a Middle East detente which would augment a detente in other parts of the world. Brandt said West Germany did not seek a mediatory role in the Middle East but was interested in helping where it could to find a just settlement to the conflict.
