Israel accused the Palestinians of having planned an outbreak of violence “long before” the current unrest began in late September. In a statement to the U.S.-led Mitchell Committee probing the causes of the violence, Israel said, “the current violence was not a spontaneous, uncontrolled outpouring in response to the visit of Ariel Sharon to the Temple Mount on 28 September 2000. The groundwork for the violence had been laid long before this.”
