Israel accused Syria today of cease-fire violations and “aggressive attacks” against the Israel Defense Forces in recent days. In a letter addressed to Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, Israeli Ambassador Yosef Tekoah cited four cases of Syrian violations of the cease-fire and warned that these attacks “indicate that Syria pursues a policy aimed at creating conditions of military confrontation along the cease-fire line.”

Tekoah, who requested that his letter be circulated as an official document of the General Assembly and the Security Council, claimed that the Syrian leadership openly proclaims its intention to “persist in a state of war against Israel.” Tekoah drew Waldheim’s attention to a statement by President Hafez Assad on March 8 in which the Syrian President declared: “Palestine is not only a part of the Arab world but it is the principal part of southern Syria. It is our inescapable duty and our right to insist that Palestine should be a liberated part of our Arab land and Syria.”
