A ranking Soviet diplomat was quoted here today having advised a prominent Jewish personality that the question of Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union to Israel in the form of “reunion of families” was an “open question be answer to which might depend on Israel policy in the present Middle East crisis.”
News of the Soviet admonition came as reports were increasingly circulated here that Moscow, simultaneously with its public attacks on Israel, was giving hints to the effect that the Soviet attitude towards Israel might change if Israel adopted a less pro-Western policy. One report had it that the Soviets hinted they would end their anti-Israel campaign if the Israel Government came out publicly against the Baghdad Pact.
