At the close of two full days of track and field events at the Fourth International Maccabiah which is being held at the Ramath Gan Stadium, near here, Israel had a slight lead over the United States. With both teams well in front of the contingents from the other 21 nations. competing in the “Jewish Olympic Games,” the score stood: Israel, 138 points; United States, 124 points.
American athletes have broken a number of records in the past two days. Dr. Irwin N. Tekulsky of New York took first place in an “English Shooting Match,” scoring 588 points out of a possible score of 600 and setting a new Maccabiah record. Martin Engel of New York set a new Maccabiah hammer throwing mark of 163 feet six inches to shatter the old record by 31 feet.
Henry Laskau of Mineola, New York, beat his own record in the 3,000 metre walk to set a mark of 13 minutes 45 seconds. Jack Goldberg of Dorchester, Massachusetts, won the 110 metre hurdles in 14,9 seconds to beat the old mark by three-fifths of a second. In gymnastics Abraham I. Grossfield of New York took first place in all events but one, while in fencing Allan S. Kwartler of New York took first place. An American team came in first in the semi-finals of the 400-maire relay race.
