American experts on small arms claim that Israel and the Russian-equipped Arab countries “have better small weapons than the United States infantrymen and marines,” the Washington Post reported today. With regard to Israel, the report said:
“Israel’s soldiers are equipped with the Belgian version of a light rifle that is scheduled for pilot production by the United States. But American forces now still shoulder the M-l Garand rifle, introduced in 1936, and machine guns that date back to World War I. They throw a 1906-model cartridge.”
