All Israel Government offices in the United States, as well as all offices of Zionist groups, were closed today in respect to Dr. Weizmann. Memorial services were held in various agencies.
Officials of the Israeli Consulate, the Jewish Agency and other organizations met at the consulate today for services led by Ambassador Abba Eban. A memorial service for Dr. Weizmann was also held at the offices of the Jewish Agency and Louis Lipsky, chairman of the American Zionist Council, and Gottlieb Hammer, the Agency’s executive director, delivered eulogies The Kaddish prayer was recited by Rabbi Zevi Tabory.
Memorial services were also held at the headquarters of Hadassah where eulogies were delivered by Mrs. Siegfried Kramarsky and Mrs. Rebecca Shulman, leader of the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. The national board of Hadassah voted to name the new Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center which is being built at Ein Kerem, outside of Jerusalem, for Dr. Weizmann.
The American Zionist Council, in which all Zionist groups are represented, today announced it would hold a meeting of all Zionist organizations in this country in about 30 days in memory of Dr. Weizmann. The Zionist Organization of America announced that it would be represented at Dr. Weizmann’s funeral by Dr. Emannel Neumann, American member of the Jewish Agency executive.
Memorial services were also held today by the American and World Jewish Congresses at the Stephem Wise Congress House. The executive bodies and staffs of the Labor Zionist Organization of America, the Pioneer Women’s Organization and the Farband-Labor Zionist Order held memorial services at their headquarters where leaders of the Zionist labor groups delivered brief eulogies.
The offices of the State of Israel Bond organization were closed today in tribute to Dr. Weizmann. The organization issued a statement saying: “We mourn the passing of one of the great statesmen of our era. He belongs with Wilson, Masaryk, Roosevelt and Churchil as a master builder of democracy and world brotherhood. He practiced statesmanship in terms of the highest human values. He practiced science as a true benefactor of humanity. He led the Jewish people to independence and statehood as an unreminding crusader for democracy.”
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency today continued to receive statements from all parts of the world reflecting the deep impression which Dr. Weizmann’s death made in many countries. The American Jewish organizations which today issued statements of condolence included the labor Zionist Organization of America, American Fund for Israel Institutions, B### Council of America, Jewish Theological Seminary and others.
