A report submitted to the United Nations General Assembly here reveals that Israel and the Arab States where refugees are sheltered have together offered $716,000, as October 31, towards the $50,000.000 target budget of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees.
The report points out mat of this, only $1.’ 250 has actually been paid in — by Israel — as part of an offer of $l5,000 in gasoline, along with another Israel offer of $50,000 in-cash. “Egypt has pledged $39,000; Jordan, $168, 000; Syria, “$60; 000, and Lebanon, $33, 000, all still to be paid. Of the Arab state where the are no refugees, Saudi-Arabia has contributed $115,000; Kuwait, $31, 500, and Bahrein, $20,926, or a total of $167,426. The report showed no contribution from Iraq.
Sharp criticism of those seeking to whittle down the budget of the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was voiced here by Mrs. Zena Harmon, member of the Israeli delegation, speaking before the Social Commute of the U.N. General Assembly. She said that 53 nations to date had contributed $108,000. 000 to the UNICEF and the public had contributed another $13,000; 000. The fund she said logically moved from emergency to long-range programs.
