The State Department today took “under advisement” an Israeli note asking American help in ending a new series of incursions by Egyptian-commanded fedayeen raiders.
Israel charged in the note delivered here that Egypt has violated the terms of the United Nations cease-fire agreement. Egyptian commando raids, now mainly launched from Jordanian bases, indicate Egypt is returning to belligerency. Israel referred to a United Nations resolution adopted November 2, calling for cessation of all hostilities.
The attention of the State Department was drawn to a Cairo broadcast of December 2, announcing resumption of fedayeen activities against Israel. Israel reported that this broadcast was followed by 19 raids, mostly from Jordanian territory. The raids took place between December 3 and December 24.
A State Department spokesman today declined to comment directly when asked about the U.S. opinion on the timing of Israeli troop withdrawal. The State Department position is that this is a matter on which it would be up to the United Nations to comment.
