Official sources declined to comment tonight on a report that Cuba’s Premier Fidel Castro told the non-aligned nations conference in Algiers that his country is breaking diplomatic relations with Israel. The sources pointed out that no official announcement from Cuba’s government had arrived at the Foreign Office. The Foreign Office officials stressed that no official reaction will be expressed until an official announcement arrives from Cuba.

Israeli radio reporters who contacted the Israeli Consulate in Havana learned that even the Israeli staff in Cuba did not know about Castro’s declaration. Cuba was the single Communist state, apart from Rumania, which had diplomatic relations with Israel since the Six-Day War. Both Israel and Cuba had legations–not embassies–in Havana and Tel Aviv.
