Israel Ambassador Abba Eban called today for United States support of Israel in the Security Council when the Syrian complaint comes up for discussion next Tuesday.
In a statement made after a conference with Francis Wilcox, Assistant Secretary of State for United Nations Affairs, the Ambassador expressed hope that the U.S. would “follow its traditional practice” of supporting the findings of UN officials in such matters. Mr. Eban also discussed the matter by telephone with Henry Cabot Lodge, U.S. delegate to the UN.
The Syrian complaint to the Security Council, charging Israeli violation of the armistice agreement by erection of a temporary bridge across the Huleh swamps in the demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria, was filed after Col. Byron V. Leary, acting head of the UN Truce Supervision Organization, ruled that construction of the bridge was not of itself a violation of the pact.
Earlier today Mr. Eban met with William Rountree, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, He discussed matters left over from the visit of Ambassador James P. Richards to Israel in connection with the Eisenhower Doctrine. The Ambassador also took up the possibility of a communique on the Richards visit.
