Israel sources today blamed the Egyptians for a clash yesterday reported by the United Nations Emergency Force as having resulted in the killing of a Bedouin woman and child.
According to the UNEF report, four armed Israelis were intercepted in Egyptian territory south of Rafah at the southernmost section of the Gaza Strip border. When intercepted, according to the UNEF report, the Israelis said they had lost their way and withdrew across the border. Subsequently, said the UNEF report, the UNEF patrol learned that the Israelis had engaged a Bedouin camp.
Israel sources said that Egyptians had opened an attack on an Israel patrol which was well inside Israel territory, launching an incident in which the Israel patrol chased the Egyptians back into Egyptian territory. The Israel sources said that the Israel patrol then retreated to Israel territory still under Egyptian fire. The Israel sources added they had no information about any casualties resulting from the incident.
The United Arab Republic has lodged a protest with the Egyptian-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission and has called for an emergency commission meeting. The Egyptian press declared today that “Egyptians will not remain with folded hands in view of the Israeli aggression.”
