More than 350 Jewish leaders, consisting of members of the Board of Governors of the Israel Bond Organization and campaign chairmen in major cities in the United States and Canada, will meet in a three-day planning conference beginning Friday, January 12 to draft a program of large-scale economic aid to Israel in 1962, Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, vice-president of the organization, announced today.
Levi Eshkol, Finance Minister of the State of Israel, who has made a special trip to the United States to take part in the planning sessions, will present a report on Israel’s economic progress during the past year and her development plans and needs for the current year. Dr. Schwartz pointed out that the conference would consider methods of broadening the scope of the Israel bond campaign which has provided more than $530, 000, 000 for Israel’s economic growth during the past eleven years.
“The year 1962 will see a concentration on development efforts in the Negev,” Dr. Schwartz said. “This area, which is now largely a desert, must be developed into a center of mass settlement during the coming years, with special emphasis on industrialization, irrigation, large-scale housing, and the exploitation of mineral resources.”
