Israel does not participate in the Leipzig Fair this year because East Germany, in which Leipzig is located, has failed to acknowledge any obligation to make amends for the crimes and injustices of Nazi Germany and because East Germany has been carrying on a campaign against the West German reparations pact with Israel and against West German payment of indemnification and restitution to victims of Nazism.
This statement was made today by a spokesman for the Israel Purchasing Mission here, who specifically denied that Israel was one of the participating nations at the fair, as it had been listed by the East German press. The spokesman noted that although no Israeli exhibitor has ever appeared at the Leipzig Fair, for the past few years East German propaganda has listed Israel as a participating nation.
