Israeli construction engineers reported today that the levelling of one section of the 38-kilometer road from Kurnub to Sodom on the southwest coast of the Dead Sea, has been completed and that paving of the strip will now start.
The road will give the Israelis direct access to the Dead Sea for exploitation of its minerals. The road crosses some of the most difficult terrain in the country and drops from a height of about 1,300 feet above sea level to 1,300 feet below sea level. It is traversed by a number of wadis and ravines, across which bridges will have to be built. About 500 new immigrants will be employed on the project.
