The Cabinet of Israel heard detailed analyses today of the Middle East political situation as it affects the Jewish State from Foreign Minister Golda Meir and Ambassador Abba Eban, who is currently here.
Presumably, the Ministers discussed the heightened Soviet-Egyptian propaganda campaign charging Israel with preparing an “imminent” assault on Jordan, from which British troops will shortly be evacuated. It is understood that the Cabinet also considered its relations with Guinea, which recently chose to cut its ties with France.
Finally, the Cabinet discussed possible sources of revenue for financing the unexpected immigration from Eastern Europe. It is understood that whatever decision is reached will be taken only after a meeting with Jewish Agency leaders, though the Cabinet is said to prefer a voluntary loan of 20,000,000 pounds to be offered to the Israeli public.
Official Israel circles remained silent today on the latest Moscow-Cairo propaganda attack on Israel, charging the Jewish State with “aggressive intentions” against Jordan.
However, observers here pointed to an ominous parallel with the Soviet-Egyptian propaganda drive against Turkey which served as a smoke screen behind which Nasser organized the coup which culminated in the annexation of Syria.
At the same time, political commentators noted that Bagdad too had joined the anti-Israel chorus, promising to defend Jordan against an attack by Jerusalem. They interpreted this as an indirect warning to Cairo that Iraq would not stand by and see Jordan swallowed up.
