The Israel Cabinet heard a report today from Premier Moshe Sharett, in his capacity as Foreign Minister, on the possible effects on Israel of the projected Turkish-Iraqi defense alliance.
The draft of the Turkish-Iraqi agreement, which is being studied here, has provoked fear among Israel statesmen that it can serve as a further basis for arming Iraq, which is hostile to the Jewish, State. There are other features in the pact which are considered as aimed against Israel. These features originated with Iran and not with Turkey, it is believed here.
At today’s Cabinet meeting a committee was appointed to conduct talks with Ambassador Eric Johnston, President Eisenhower’s personal envoy, upon his arrival here this week to discuss regional water development projects. The committee is composed of several members of the Cabinet and of high government officials who will participate in the talks as experts.
