Contradictory reports about the need for raising tuition fees at Israel’s schools of higher learning were submitted to Israel’s Cabinet today. One of the reports called for doubling tuition fees from the present 600 Israeli pounds ($200) per year to 1,200 pounds ($400). The other report rejected the notion of any tuition increases at the present time.
The Government is concerned in this matter because it meets the deficits of Israel’s institutions of higher learning. Currently, it is paying 57 percent of the university expenditures, a contribution totaling 80,000,000 pounds (about $27,000,000). The special committee named to study the issue for the Cabinet included Israel Kargman who, as chairman of the group, recommended the doubling of college fees. The other report was drafted by former Attorney General Gideon Hausner.
