The Israel Cabinet rejected yesterday a recommendation by Justice Minister Pinchas Rosen that Police Minister Behor Shitreet resign over irregularities in Israel’s prison system which enabled Arab prisoners to break out of Shatta prison this summer, it was reported here today.
The Rosen recommendation arose out of a discussion in the Cabinet yesterday of an official report of the Shatta incident which laid blame for the break, in which a number of Jews and Arabs died and many prisoners escaped into Jordan territory, on correctional authorities. Jurisdiction of prisons rests with the Police Ministry.
