The Israel Cabinet discussed today the security position of the country for the third consecutive meeting. It dealt primarily with the possibilities in Jordan and the implications of the new tripartite United Arab Republic composed of Egypt, Syria and Iraq.
As a result of today’s meeting, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion will address the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, tomorrow and suggest that the United States and the Soviet Union Join in a mutual guarantee of Israel’s borders as the best way to assure stability in the Middle East. He will also propose that the Big Powers require Egypt to formally recognize Israel, if the Cairo Government is to receive further aid.
A Cabinet spokesman revealed that it was decided to form a Ministerial body to survey the adequacy of Israel’s civil defense set-up, including air raid shelters and the need for their expansion in view of the developments in the neighboring Arab countries.
