Israel would provide a base alternative to the British base in the Suez, providing the British Government could come to an agreement with the Government of Israel, Lord Strabolgi declared tonight speaking at the Anglo-Israeli Club here.
The reaching of such an agreement should not be difficult in view of our traditional friendship with the Jews,” Lord Strabolgi added. There are strong arguments, he said, favoring the cutting of a new canal across the Negev from the Mediterranean to the Gulf of Akaba. Such a canal could take the place of the Suez Canal, he pointed out.
