United Nations Day, marking the sixth anniversary of the coming into force of the United Nations Charter, was celebrated throughout Israel today with ceremonies in all schools, government circles and on the radio. Also, President Chaim Weizmann sent a message of good wishes to Secretary-General Trygve Lie.
Kol Israel, the government-owned radio station, broadcast a special program in which the chief participants were: Dr. Walter Eytan, director-general of the Foreign Ministry; U.N. truce supervisor Lt. Gen. William E. Riley; and Daniel Auster, acting chairman of the Israel United Nations Association. Premier David Ben Gurian gave a reception for U.N. personnel now in Israel and similar receptions were sponsored by the United Nations Association and the Rotary clubs of Jerusalem and Haifa.
In Haifa, the mayor proposed to the city council that one of the streets of the municipality be renamed “United Nations Street.” Cinemas throughout Israel showed special U.N. films, explaining the varied activities of the international organization. All letters were stamped today with a special U.N. cancellation.
Dr. Weizmann’s letter to Sec. Lie declared that the state and people of Israel “send warmest good wishes to the United Nations on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the organization’s founding. In these troubled times when the hearts of men throughout the world are heavy with fears for the morrow, the United Nations represents the one practical means of realizing the ancient hope of the Prophets: ‘Nation shall not lift up the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” Dr. Weizmann’s message said.
