The Norwegian freighter, Hubro, the latest Israeli-chartered ship scheduled for Suez Canal passage, was due through the waterway tomorrow bound for Haifa. The Italian ship, the S. S. Monte Pelegrino, went through the Canal Saturday night, the first ship outward bound from Haifa to make the transit to East African ports since the Sinal Operation.
The Hubro is carrying 5, 000 tons of cargo from East Africa, mainly fish meal and hides. The Monte Pellegrino carried 4, 000 tons of Israeli products, including cartons, radio sets, air-conditioners, plywood, razors and office equipment.
Egypt’s action in permitting the Israeli-chartered Italian freighter with cargo to Israel to pass unhampered through the Suez Canal in no way represents a change in Egyptian President Nasser’s anti-Israel blockade, a spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said today.
The spokesman said there was nothing unusual in the passage of an Israeli-flagged foreign ship through the Canal. He noted that Egypt had reaffirmed her intention to bar from the Canal not only Israeli ships, but also certain types of cargoes en route either to or from Israeli ports.
