Rabbi Isaac Nissim, the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, today denounced luxury spending, including elaborate Bar Mitzvah and wedding feasts, which he said were on the Increase in Israel.
In a public appeal to writers and rabbis to exercise their moral Influence, Rabbi Nissim said that on the eve of the month of Elul, preceding the High Holy Days, It was the duty of such spokesmen to urge the Jews of Israel to prepare for a “spiritual Inventory.”
