The Israel Consulate here, the only one in Germany, will close its doors in the latter half of June, it was learned today. Certain limited consular functions will, however, be exercised by a special section within the Israel Purchasing Mission in Cologne. Council Dr. Eliahu Livneh, who has healed the Consultant since 1949 and before that served as director of the Jewish Agency in Berlin for three years, will return to Israel.
Since Israel does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Germany, the Israel Consultant here has been accredited to the U.S. Army rather than to the German authorities. It is being closed in part because this arrangement cannot be continued now that Germany is about to regain almost unabridged sovereignty.
