The situation along the Israeli-Syrian border, where “a period of relative quiet “has existed for several months, has again “deteriorated” as a result of aggressions by the Armed Forces of the United Arab Republic, the Security Council here was warned this weekend by the Israel Government.
Five specific attacks by heavy Syrian gunfire, resulting in the death of one Israeli border patrol officer, the pinning-down of other Israelis, and gunfire attacks against UN observers trying to pacify the area are listed in Israel’s latest complaint to the Security Council. The attacks occurred between June 11 and June 28.
According to Michael S. Comay, Israel’s permanent representative, the Cairo radio has also stepped up its “bellicose and threatening” broadcasts. A June 27 broadcast cited by Mr. Comay declared that the First Syrian Army, along Israel’s frontier, has been ordered to “first shoot, then wait for instructions. “
Mr. Comay’s letter, addressed to Jose A. Correa, of Ecuador, this month’s president of the Council, noted that “these aggressive actions and declarations of the United Arab Republic constitute a violation of the United Nations Charter and a constant threat to peace in the area. ” The letter did not ask for a meeting of the Council, but requested only that the contents be circulated to all 11 members of the Security Council.
