The budget of the Israel Government for the fiscal year ending March 31 has been met without a deficit, Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan reported last night to the Parliament, after introducing an interim $33,000,000 budget for the first three months of the new year.
The Minister said that the increase in the present budget was necessitated primarily by the fact that the government plans new development projects as well as consolidation of the merchant marine and an increase in the scope of the country’s agriculture.
Speaking in support of the government’s allocation of $600,000 for the development of the merchant marine, Abba Hushi, member of the Mapai Party, said that Israel ships have carried two-thirds of the immigrants to Israel, but only eight per cent of Israel’s imports were transported on vessels operated by the Jewish state because of the shortage of freighters.
