The Israeli representative at the United Nations, Abba S. Eban, called for a periodic high level meeting of the Security Council to relieve world tension when he spoke in the plenary session of the General Assembly this morning. It was the first Israeli intervention in the resumed Korean debate, and came at its end.
At the last Assembly in Paris, a resolution was adopted unanimously that such a periodic meeting of the Security Council which would be attended by Foreign Ministers should be held if there was any chance of its doing any good. So far no meeting has been held. Mr. Eban made this suggestion as a possible method of keeping the Korean war and any progress toward an armistice under constant review here.
Mr. Eban said that Israel devoutly hoped that all efforts could be made for a reduction of world tension. He said that his delegation supported the resolution to continue the United Nations Korean Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency and he congratulated Donald Kingsley, its head, on the work he had done in aiding the people of South Korea. He said that despite Israel’s difficult economic position, it continued to contribute to UNKRRA to the extent to which it could.
