Arab reports that Dr. Francisco Urrutia’s mission to demilitarize the Mt. Scopus area between Israel and Jordan is deadlocked and the Colombian diplomat has queried UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold whether to continue his efforts, were denied by informed Israeli sources today. Israeli circles insist that while Dr. Urrutia’s talks have not yet produced concrete results, there is no crisis and the talks continue.
Dr. Urrutia yesterday had his fifth meeting with Israel Foreign Minister Golda Meir since his arrival in the area. Today, he went back to Amman for another conversation with Jordanian Ministers.
Arab newspapers in Jordan assert that Jordan has demanded that Mr. Hammarskjold’s representative obtain from Israel permission for regular visits to the Israeli-held zone atop the height. On the other hand, Jordan is not prepared to grant equal privileges to Dr. Urrutia to inspect its area on Mt. Scopus nor to implement the demilitarization of the area.
