Authoritative Israel sources categorically denied today that any ultimatum has been given to the United Nations that force would be used to obtain transit of a stalled Israel convoy to Mount Scopus if UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold failed to persuade Jordan to allow such passage.
The convoy has been stalled since November 20 because of Jordanian objections to several drums of gasoline which Israel officials insist has been a regular part of the convoy and which were approved by local UN officials.
Sources close to the Israel Foreign Ministry indicated that UN officials were engaged in behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts to achieve a “quiet solution” of the impasse. Experts here indicated they were not too hopeful but were not excluding entirely the possibility of an unpublicized agreement.
