The Prime Minister’s Office today denied local press reports that the government was urging Israel’s supporters in the United States to freeze the move in Congress to relocate the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
A senior government official said that “Israel’s position, which is well known, is that we would like every foreign Embassy, including that of the United States, to be sited in Jerusalem, our capital city.”
The Jerusalem Post reported from Washington Friday that supporters of the Congressional initiative were upset that the Israeli government was not backing their efforts. A bill introduced by Sen. Daniel Moynihan (D. N. Y.) has more than 30 sponsors in the Senate and more than 200 in the House. Israel has made it clear all along that the initiative for moving the Embassy did not originate in Jerusalem but among Congressmen.
