Arieh Ben Elizer, Herut member of the Israel Parliament, and his wife were yesterday held for more than six hours on Ellis Island following their arrival here by plane. They were released after the intervention of the Israeli consulate.
The immigration authorities said that Mr. Ben Eliezer, a former leader of the Irgun, had a transit visa when in fact he needed a visitor’s visa because he intended to remain in this country for several weeks. This is the second time in 16 months that Mr. Ben Eliezer, who came here in behalf of Shelach, an American organization which aids Irgun veterans’ rehabilitation in Israel, has had American visa difficulties. The immigration authorities scheduled a hearing for today to decide Mr. Ben Eliezer’s case.
