Rabbi Shlomo Rosenberg, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare and a Mizrachi leader, was acquitted today of charges of having contravened Israelis foreign currency control regulations. The court held that there was insufficient evidence against Rabbi Rosenberg, who gave up his Parliamentary immunity in order to stand trial.
The case broke last year when it was charged that Rabbi Rosenberg had transferred funds from abroad to a Mizrachi institution in violation of regulations. A political furor developed, and Rabbi Rosenberg demanded that either he be brought to trial or the Attorney General apologize for a police raid on Mizrachi world headquarters. Rabbi Jehuda Ellinson, a member of the Mizrachi world executive and a co-defendant in the case, was also acquitted.
