The Israel delegation held a long consultation here with the American delegation last night on the question of introducing a resolution on the Suez blockade next Tuesday when the U.N. Security. Council resumes discussion of Israel’s complaint against the Egyptian blockade.
An authoritative American source today said that if a resolution came before the Council at its session next Tuesday it would be a joint resolution. That meant that the United States and Britain, probably France and perhaps others would be involved. Other informed sources indicated that the aim of like leading Council members was to get a resolution before the Council as soon as possible.
American diplomatic sources confirmed today that the State Department has not yet reached a decision on the policy to follow in connection with Israel’s complaint to the Security Council against Egypt’s blockade of the Suez Canal. The American official stressed the belief that Egypt cannot be allowed “to get away with” continuation of the blockade and some action will have to be taken. The problem is, he declared, to find an effective middle course that will serve to end the blockade without offending the Arab world.
The Diplomat quoted the Israelis as holding the view that a strong Council resolution would have a powerful effect and, by showing that the Council means business, would even strengthen the possibilities of peace.
