Israel’s best-kept secret–its military industry–was unveiled here this week-end to newspapermen and government officials at a special exhibition originally planned for U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. Mortars, machine gun bullets, aerial bombs, small arms ammunition and an Israel-designed submachine gun called “Uzi” were displayed.
Government officials said that Israel’s production excels in precision manufacturing of ammunition. Special facilities for the repair of weapons and other field equipment was exhibited as were a number of civilian items also made at the plants. “Uzi,” which was designed by a young Israel technician of the same name and which is said to be superior to the Steen or Thompson submachine guns, stole the show.
