Ground was broken here today for the first vocational school in a network of 30 to be built by the Israel Education Fund, a program of the United Jewish Appeal. Senators Richard Russell of Georgia and George Smathers of Florida took part in the ceremony.
The Acre school will be erected and equipped with proceeds from the campaign in the United States for a five-year capital fund of $127,600,000 to build a chain of academic, vocational and comprehensive high schools, pre-kindergarten schools, libraries and science laboratories. The fund will also provide student scholarships and grants for teachers in training.
Sen. Smathers told the gathering that it was free high school education, “perhaps more than anything else that welded the United States–a larger nation of immigrants and refugees–into the unified and powerful force in the free world which it is today” and that success of the Israel Education Fund program would be a firm step in the same direction for Israel.
