Israel was elected today as one of the seven vice-presidents of the United Nations General Assembly, the first time since Israel’s admission to the United Nations that it has been elected to a post in the plenary Assembly. Israel will thus have a seat in the general committee of the Assembly which fixes the agenda of the Assembly and determines the assignment of agenda items to the seven committees of the Assembly. Ambassador Abba S. Eban, head of the Israel delegation, sat this afternoon in the first meeting of the general committee.
Israel contested for one of the two open vice-presidencies with Mexico, Pakistan and Greece. Mexico, with 43 votes, and Israel, with 37, were elected. Pakistan received 30 votes and Greece, nine.
As in past years, it is anticipated that Palestine questions on the agenda will be assigned to the Ad Hoc Political committee, of which Dr. Miguel Rafael Urquia, of El Salvador, is chairman.
