The Israeli Embassy here has been in constant touch with the United States Department of State all this weekend, in connection with the latest flare-up of fighting on the Syrian-Israeli border, it was learned here today. Spokesmen for the Embassy, however, refused to identify the personalities with whom they talked at the State Department, saying merely that the contact had been “on various levels.”
It was noted that Adlai E. Stevenson, chairman of the United States delegation to the United Nations, was in Washington this weekend, when the Syrian fighting flared. He was here mainly for the purpose of conferring with Secretary of State Dean Rusk on another matter of concern, to Israel among other UN members. That issue is the Soviet Union’s continued refusal to pay for the UN’s peace-keeping operations, both on the Gana Strip and Charm el-sheikh and in the Congo.
There was a possibility also, although none of the Israelis would confirm such reports, that the Israeli Embassy has been in touch here with the ambassadors of most of the ten other members of the Security Council, besides the U. S. A. (From Israel it was reported that Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, also conferred today with some of the envoys from countries now represented on the Security Council.) In addition to the permanent members of the Security Council–the United States, Britain, France, the Soviet Union and Nationalist China–the current Council has representation also from Bolivia, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Czechoslo vakia, Norway and Morocco.
