A British Foreign Office spokesman said today that the Israel Minister to Britain, Dr. Mordecai Eliash, called at the Foreign Office in connection with Israel’s request of Britain and the United States to intervene with the Iraqi Government against the renewed wave of persecution now under way against the Jewish population of that country. The spokesman added that Israel’s delegate to the United Nations, Aubrey S. Eban, had approached the British delegation at Lake Success on the same subject.
The British Government considers it has no position to take in this matter “for the time being,” the spokesman said. He disclosed that the British Government has made inquiries concerning the reports of anti-Jewish persecutions in Iraq, but to date has received no replies, nor have any direct reports on the alleged events been received in London.
