Michael Amir, Israel Minister to the Benelux countries, today paid an official visit to Liege, where he was welcomed by the local Bishop, Provincial Governor and Mayor. Mr. Amir paid tribute to the courage of the people of Liege during the Nazi occupation of Belgium and pointed up the aid they extended to the local Jewish community.

All Jewish groups in Liege provided an enthusiastic welcome to the Israel Minister. Liege Jews were particularly proud of the fact that the flag of Israel was flying from the Hotel de Swede which, during the Nazi occupation, flew the Nazi emblem. A decree ordering all Jews in Liege to wear the yellow Star of David badge was issued from the Nazi commandant’s headquarters in the same hotel.
