Israel Finance Minister Levi Eshkol today met separately with top American officials to discuss economic matters bearing on Israel development. He saw Undersecretary of State Herbert Hoover, Jr., Secretary of Agriculture Ezra P. Benson, Deputy Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs Herbert Prochnow and met for lunch with Eric Johnston, President Eisenhower’s special envoy on Near Eastern water cooperation.
In his meetings, Mr. Eshkol expressed Israel’s view of the importance of American aid. It is thought that the $75,000,000 loan requested by Israel from the Export-Import Bank will be discussed more intensively in the near future. Mr. Eshkol was accompanied by Israel Ambassador Abba Eban and Meir Sherman, an Israeli economic official.
Mr. Eshkol and Ambassador Eban also met with William Rountree, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. It is believed that Mr. Eban, in the course of conversation today, drew the State Department’s attention to the most recent Jordanian attack in which three members of an archaeological party were killed and 15 others were wounded at Ramath Rachel yesterday.
