Israel’s Foreign Minister, Mrs. Golda Mayer, conferred with United Nations truce chief Gen. E.L.M. Burns for 90 minutes today. This is their second conversation since Monday on the rapidly worsening situation along the Israel-Jordan border.
Before conferring with Mrs. Mayer, Gen. Burns met with Gen Ali Abu Nuwar, commander-in-chief of the Jordan Army. He was accompanied to both meetings by Henri Vigier, his political advisor, and Col. J. Leary, his military advisor.
The Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission will meet tomorrow, at the request of both Israel and Jordan, to consider a number of incidents. Among the complaints before the MAC will be continuous harrying of settlers in the Kastel area by Jordanians, several exchanges of fire between Israel and Jordan troops, the firing on UN observers by Jordanians, and the Jordanians shooting down an Israeli reconnaissance plane.
Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Eric Thalin, UN observer shot by Jordan villagers yesterday while investigating an Israel-Jordan clash, was operated on at Hadassab Hospital here for wounds of the chest and spine. He remained in grave condition. He was also given a number of transfusions.
Majors George Flint and Marcel Breault, Canadian UN observers wounded Tuesday when they stepped on a mine on Mt. Scopus, are slightly improved and were allowed visitors today. doctors believe that it will be several more days before-they are completely out of danger.
