Israel Foreign Minister Golda Meir exchanged views on the Middle East situation with Under Secretary of State Herbert Hoover, Jr., and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs William Rountree. She was accompanied by Israel Ambassador Abba Eban and Minister Reuven Shiloah.
Mrs. Meir refused to elaborate on the talks. When asked whether the status of the Gaza Strip was discussed she said no. Asked whether reports of Egyptian deportation of Jews came up, she also said no. But she added that she was sure there are no differences of opinion on that subject.
A warning of the danger presented by Egyptian President Nasser to the free world was voiced by Mrs. Meir at an AFL-CIO luncheon tendered here in her honor. George Meany, national president of the organized American labor movement, speaking at the gathering, paid tribute to Israels courage, and renewed assurances that Israel “would not stand alone.” He insisted that United Nations forces should be stationed in Egypt until an Israel-Egyptian peace settlement is negotiated and the Suez Canal issue settled to insure passage of ships of all nations including Israel.
